The Environment Agency is a non-departmental public body responsible to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and an Assembly Sponsored Public Body responsible to the National Assembly for Wales. Environment Agency Flood Map for Burridge
Managing flood risk has never been more important with over 2.5 million properties in England and Wales at risk from flooding from rivers and the sea. Changes in our climate, such as more severe storms and wetter winters, will increase that risk.
Through flood risk management, we can reduce the probability of flooding from rivers through the management of land, river systems, and flood defences. The EA works to reduce the damage floods can do through effective land use planning, flood warning and emergency responses.
Informing people a flood is about to happen is vital, as it gives them time to prepare. The EA also encourages residents in risk areas to make a flood plan, so that they are ready when the warning comes.
If a flood happens then the EA will work with the police and other emergency services to help or evacuate people. The EA also conducts large-scale flooding exercises to prepare for the worst. The best way to reduce the risk of flood is to focus on ways that work with nature, not against it, such as constructing flood barriers.
